What an intense past two years 2020 has been! A global pandemic, a nation-wide racial awakening, and an election that the world sat on the edges of their seats to witness. As much division as we have seen, we’ve also experienced individuals, families, and communities coming together and looking for ways to support, empower, and encourage each other. It has been quite a time to be alive!
Our desire to assist, encourage, and support drives our communities’ ability to thrive. One of the most gratifying ways to support communities in their quest to thrive is by volunteering. I'm writing to you to ask that you consider volunteering and sharing your time, skills, and abilities with ADEFUA Cultural Education Workshop (ACEW), a non-profit organization that is central to youth, families, and communities within and surrounding Seattle. ADEFUA provides various interactive West African experiences and activities, both academically and socially to all generations.
The goal of ADEFUA is to educate and empower youth and families through the engagement of cultural music, song, and dance.
I have been a volunteer with ADEFUA for two years. It has been my honor to play a role in the future success of this great organization. As a current member of the Board of Directors for ADEFUA, I have started along the path of assisting with organizational infrastructure updates as well as the reconnecting to my own African heritage. I’ve spent my time with ADEFUA looking at contracts, editing materials, emceeing annual events and even playing a shakerêe in a band that needed an extra hand. Because of the vibrancy of the experiences, the culture, the environment and atmosphere and the thorough inclusivity I have felt as a volunteer/board member, I look for ways to support ADEFUA’s mission and encourage others to do the same in any way they can.
