I was running a Hip Hop dance program at the time and wanted to expose my students to the somatic roots of the movement. Afua was perfect for this job! Her deep cultural, musical, and physical knowledge of West African dance was such a treat to experience! She brought live musicians with her, she brought clothing, she told stories, and she transported my kids into another world which is exactly what I believe young minds need.

For several years my two children and I were blessed with the opportunity to attend dance classes and cultural workshops with ADEFUA. What a gift!!! I so appreciated being welcomed into community with them, and made to feel at home there. Sharing dance and music is such a powerful way of opening hearts, supporting health, facilitating healing of short and long term trauma, and bringing people together in love. I cherish my experiences with Afua Kouyate and her very special family. ADEFUA programs truly create peace on earth. WOW!

I have been participating in arts and culture classes offered by Adefua for over 15 years! They have always strived to bring the teachers who are top notch artists and are proficient instructors at dance and music. The artists they highlight share aspects of West African culture in a way that honors traditional arts. The work they do brings the community together and enrich us. Adefua is an incredibly valuable resource in Seattle!

I have been so grateful to take lessons under Ms. Afua! She is a very detailed teacher. She breaks down the steps for us, comes close to show someone who may need extra help. She is a gentle and kind teacher. I have benefited from her programs being free of charge. She's a huge asset to the community and to individual dancers giving us a new vocabulary to express ourselves. When she teach, she provides us with historical information so we know the origins and purpose of the movement. I love dancing with her and feel as though she is family. Her family is always there and she's a mothering spirit to all of us.
